Calcutta Rescue is a non-governmental organisation operating in
Calcutta and rural West Bengal. It aims to provide free medical
care and other benefits to the destitute and socially disadvantaged
of these areas regardless of sex, age, caste or religion. At present
the organisation has four free outpatient clinics and one outreach
project. Between them they see approximately 350 to 400 patients
a day. Free treatment, nutritional supplements, clothes and hygiene
products are given to patients suffering from chronic illnesses
such as tuberculosis, leprosy, diabetes heart disease, or from other
infectious diseases and malnutrition. There are also three non-formal
schools, supporting 300 slum children in free education, food and
health screening, offering basic literacy and numeracy and thus
better prospects than their socio-economic condition might otherwise
allow. Strong emphasis is laid on education, with the objective
of equipping patients with the necessary tools to improve their
own health. Finally, there are two vocational training projects
based outside Calcutta, which teach the rudiments of weaving.
Calcutta Rescue have employed, trained and developed local staff
and at present we have 150 local staff members. In addition we recruit
a limited number of western volunteer nurses and midwives. The job
focuses on skill sharing with local staff and is more of a managerial
role as the 'hands on work' is predominantly carried out by our
local staff. We prefer volunteers to commit for a minimum of nine
months but in some cases exceptions can be made to nurses who are
only available for six months.
Volunteers must be RGN nurses / midwives with two years post registration
experience. Sponsorship is available to help cover living costs
if required. Nurses who have already travelled or worked outside
Europe are preferred but not essential. The capacity to be part
of a team, have a good sense of humour and plenty of enthusiasm
and the adaptability to work in a non-hospital environment is important.
These are challenging but very rewarding positions and an excellent
opportunity to gain some overseas experience.
