CAMP AMERICA was established over 30 years ago, as a subsidiary
of the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS), with the aim
of recruiting British college students to work on American Summer
Camps. The US Government believed that American youngsters would
benefit from the skills and interests the foreign counsellors would
bring to camp. The programme has expanded rapidly since the summer
of 1969. Applicants do not now need to be students, and the numbers
have increased annually. In 1993 CAMP AMERICA recruited over 6200
participants to attend the 700+ camps associated with the programme
and a large proportion of that number were nurses. CAMP AMERICA
has massive demand for nurses as counsellors, to work at summer
camp for a 9 week period from June.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants are assessed at interview. Nurses are welcome as camp
counsellors but can not practice in a nursing capacity unless they
hold the appropriate US qualifications. Requirements include being
a minimum age of 18 (by June 1) and to be available for at least
9 weeks (to start during June). Applicants should be aware that
camps cater predominantly for children aged 6-16, and are situated
in RURAL America, sometimes having only basic conditions.
Terms of Contract
The total cost for applicants is £380 - 1st Deposit £60; 2nd Deposit £66;
Third Deposit £0; Medical Insurance Payment £160; Airport Tax £94.
There are additional costs not payable to Camp America and this can be

London-New York return flight, J-1 Visa sponsorship, board and
