Concern is a non-denominational voluntary organisation dedicated to the relief, assistance and advancement of people in the least developed countries of the world.

Concern's emergency and long term development programmes are currently operating in 24 countries in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. These programmes are financed and operated by Concern in partnership with local bodies, international agencies and governments. Expatriate volunteers and staff are recruited to provide management skills and technical advice for our overseas programmes. There are on average 150 expatriate staff working overseas on both our long term development (in areas such as Natural Resource, Health and Nutrition, Water and Sanitation) and emergency relief programmes.

A nurse working with Concern will have the opportunity to become involved in some aspects of Primary Health Care (PHC), (such as mother and child health, health education, nutritional surveillance, on a community basis), the overall aim being to improve the health status of the local community by reducing mortality and morbidity from largely preventable diseases. However, should an emergency relief situation arise, nurses who have gained experience in a health programme may be transferred from their project area to meet priorities at a given time. The number of nurses working in a particular project area will vary depending on the size and type of programme.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should be RGNs with a minimum of 1 year's post qualification experience. Additional post qualification training in Midwifery, Paediatrics, and / or Community health is an advantage. Concern have a minimum age requirement of 24 years.

Volunteers receive the following allowances: monthly living allowance paid in country and a volunteer allowance paid directly into their bank account in their normal country of residence. Field management posts are salaried.

Concern cover the cost of return airfares, accommodation (shared with three or more volunteers in a Concern house), predeparture and post assignment medicals including vaccinations, and life, accident and medical insurance whilst overseas. On contracts longer than one year they also provide a baggage allowance on taking up and leaving assignment. On the second year of service, volunteers receive an increased in their volunteer allowance and are eligible to join the Concern pension scheme.

Prior to departure, orientation and training courses are provided by Concern and APSP (Agency for Personnel Services Overseas). Incountry induction and language training is also available.

Interviews are held throughout the year. The number of openings will be determined by the needs identified in the countries of operation.

Applicants who meet our criteria are screened and interviewed. Subject to interview and verification of references, applicants can be either appointed to a specific opening or to a panel. People on panel are assigned where possible to vacancies as they arise.
