EMMS Nazareth was established in
1841 to pioneer and support the medical aspect of Christian missionary
work. It has supported the medical training of over 400 Christian
medical students with a view to them serving with missionary societies
throughout the world. Many of these students started new medical
clinics abroad, some of which developed into mission hospitals.
One of these hospitals, the Nazareth Hospital, founded in Nazareth,
Israel in 1861, continues as an EMMS owned hospital to this day.
The Nazareth Hospital is a Christian institution, independent of
church denomination or political affiliation, which exists to glorify
God and be a witness to His love as manifested in the life and teaching
of Jesus of Nazareth. The hospital aims to serve all who seek treatment
without prejudice to any religious, ethnic or social background.
The hospital has a large nursing staff comprising local nurses
trained to both practical and Registered nurse standard, plus a
number of overseas nurses with various specialities.
Qualifications and Experience
Israeli licensing requirements mean that in order to practise all
nurses must be locally registered. To achieve this nurses and midwives
must pass the appropriate Israeli examinations, which are now only
produced in Hebrew.
However if a nurse or midwife wished to spend time at the Hospital
as a volunteer, they would be able to do so, but at the standard
of an advanced aide nurse. This would mean that they would not be
able to undertake many of the normal nursing duties, meaning that
many of their talents would go unused. For midwives it also means
that they would not be able to actually deliver babies, but only
work in the ante natal and post natal care on the Maternity Ward,
as an advanced aide nurse.
Terms of Contract
Visa requirements restrict volunteers to a maximum of 9 months
in Nazareth. They may get an extra 3 months if they are willing
to leave the country for a while, but even this does not guarantee
more time.
Flight expenses are paid by the volunteer, though the Hospital
will pay for transport from the airport. The Hospital also provides
board and lodging and a small stipend or "pocket money" of 300 NIS
per month (approx US$75). This would pay for essentials only, volunteers
would have to provide for any travel and sightseeing they would
like to do while they are here.
