The Society for Environmental Exploration is a non-profit making organisation, established in 1989. The Society's objective is to provide a channel through which individuals can make an active contribution to urgent research and conservation issues in the developing world. Projects organised by the Society operate under the name of FRONTIER and are developing jointly with the national research institutions and wildlife authorities in co-operating countries. Project work varies considerably, but is always directed in some way towards the protection of natural wildlife habitats.
FRONTIER projects currently operate in Madagascar, Tanzania and Cambodia, working towards the protection of some of the world's most threatened ecosystems.
Participation
Individuals are expected to raise sponsorship to cover the cost of their participation. Teams are assembled for four, eight, ten or twenty week expeditions which undertake assignments that form part of longer term research and development programmes. Trained nurses in the past have mostly taken part on exactly the same basis as other volunteers. Given their expertise in the medical field however, nurses often take an interest in health care and hygiene in the field. Volunteer nurses would be neither expected nor encouraged to cope with an emergency situation unless absolutely necessary.
Expedition groups are equipped with medical kits tailored by experience to suit the relevant environmental conditions. Individuals are not usually selected on the basis of academic qualifications. Versatility, enthusiasm, initiative and the capacity to tolerate and even enjoy basic field conditions are valued more highly.
Cost
Each volunteer is required to raise a contribution towards expedition costs that currently start from £1200 for 4-weeks, £1700 for 8-weeks, £2100 for 10- weeks and from £3200 for a twenty week expedition (excluding flight and visa). This covers costs including travel, food, accommodation, and medical and travel insurance.
