The Sail Training Association (STA) is a registered charity with
the objective of developing maturity and social awareness in young
people (aged 16-24).
During the past 27 years the STA schooners (Sir Winston Churchill
and Malcolm Miller) have taken over 30,000 young people to sea.
The ships need a full crew of 55 to sail them and the young people
form a vital part of that team. Each voyage lasts 10 - 14 days,
mainly starting and finishing in UK ports & visiting two or three
northern continental ports during the course of the voyage.
No previous sailing experience is necessary to take part in the
voyages. Nurses are needed for the mixed crew and all girls voyages.
Qualifications and Experience
Qualified RGNs only, although there is no minimum age.
Terms of Contract
You will be asked to contribute £5.00 per night towards costs plus
£8.00 per week for insurance. In addition you are responsible for
making your own way to and from the terminal ports. (Voyage fees
for the young people vary between £500 and £800 for the same trips).
Additional Qualifications
No sailing experience or other qualifications are required.
How to Apply
Write to Mrs Hilary Goater at the above address. The programme
of voyages is available from September in the previous year and
places are filled on a "first come" basis. Voyages run during the
period February to December. STA also keeps details on nurses who
might be available to fill a vacancy at short notice.
