The Leprosy Mission was founded in 1874 and is an International, interdenominational Christian organisation bringing healing to nearly 200,000 patients in over 30 countries. This is done both directly and in co-operation with many churches, governments and voluntary groups. The Mission aims to meet the total needs (physical, spiritual, social, psychological) of individuals and communities affected by leprosy and to work towards the eradication of the disease.

A small number of expatriate nurses are employed by The Leprosy Mission at its own hospitals or more usually in clinics, units or hospitals of national governments or Christian missions in Africa and Asia. The main role of all expatriate health professionals is to train national staff.

Qualifications and Experience

All staff on overseas service with The Leprosy Mission must be practising Christians in regular fellowship with their church. Candidates are normally expected to have undertaken a period of Bible College training. Nurses recruited will have a minimum of 2 years post registration experience, and a midwifery qualification is helpful. Candidates need good physical and psychological health, the ability to learn languages, and the capacity to live in a remote area in a developing country with a tropical climate.

Two interviews, one at the national office and one in London, will help ascertain the applicant's suitability for overseas service with the Mission.

Terms of Contract

Contracts are normally for a minimum of four years. The allowance paid will be related to the cost of living in the country in which they will be based. National Insurance and pension contributions will be paid whilst abroad. Provision for and payment of training, travel, accommodation etc. is undertaken by TLM.

Training & Orientation

A period of specialist medical training in India or Ethiopia, language training and mission training will be arranged by TLM after a candidate has been accepted.
