Trekforce Worldwide (formerly Trekforce Expeditions) was formed in 1990 as a UK registered charity (No. 1005452) and is entirely funded by voluntary contributions from individuals and corporate bodies. Its role is to raise funds and enlist the aid of sponsors to finance the organisation and staffing of expeditions which support science, conservation and community projects in Central America and South East Asia. The Trust is non-political.

Responsibilities of the medic

As a member of the medical team you will be responsible for the general health of expedition staff and its members for the duration of the expedition. The medical teams normally consist of one doctor and one nurse for every 15 - 20 trekkers, although sometimes the number will be higher. Each expedition is backed up by a fully comprehensive medical kit, made up in consultation with expedition medics and qualified pharmacists. Most medical problems tend to be of a fairly minor nature - stomach upsets, D&V, insect bites and stings, cuts and bruises but always there is the minor threat of a major injury.

The more serious problems such as malaria or any other tropical illness are few and far between, although they have occurred over the years we have been running expeditions. Each expedition is backed by a fully comprehensive medical and evacuation insurance and all have the full support and assistance of local authorities and international search and rescue teams.

As a medic you will be working alongside the trekkers and are just a part of the team as they are. In fact you are just as likely as the trekkers to bang your thumb with a hammer!! Medics make a contribution to the ISST in order to go on an expedition. Please ask us for the current rate.
