VSO enables men and women to work alongside people in poorer countries
in order to share skills, build capabilities and promote international
understanding and action, in the pursuit of a more equitable world.
The promotion of health and rehabilitation in more than 30 developing
countries is the central focus of the work of VSO in health and
a growing number of skill areas are now being requested. This includes
assessment, prevention, education, outreach primary care and secondary
care for the least advantaged. There is an increasing need for volunteers
to work with people with disabilities.
General hospital nurses, nurse trainers, health visitors, psychiatric
nurses, registered nurses of mentally handicapped, midwives, Occupational
therapists, physiotherapists, and nurses working with people with
learning / physical disabilities, HIV and AIDs Counselling / community
health workers are all needed. VSO also recruits teachers, business
advisors, social and community workers, technical and agricultural
professionals and many others.
Qualifications and Experience
Are you: Aged 20 - 70
Able to spend at least 2 years overseas
Willing to work for a local salary
Nurses need to be registered and have a minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience. The application process takes something like 6-9 months and volunteers need to have their 3 years experience before applying.
Terms of contract
Posts are for two years. Salary paid at local rate, basic accommodation
provided. Return fares, medical insurance and National Insurance
contributions paid by VSO. VSO opens an ISA account on your behalf
and provides grants for suitable equipment, clothing etc. Pre-departure
primary health care training courses and language training courses
where necessary are run by VSO.
