Youth Challenge International is a Canadian based non profit organisation
which combines community service, medical work and environmental
research in adventurous and demanding projects conducted by international
volunteers aged 18-30 years. An experienced international volunteer
team of specialists, including medical personnel, scientists, youth
leaders, engineers, ensure that the projects are dynamic, appropriate
and result-orientated. Programs include the Community Development
in Costa Rica/Guyana, the Leadership Practicum in Vanuatu/Nicaragua
& Costa Rica, and the Discovery Program in Guyana.
Qualifications and Experience
Applications are currently being sought from nurses
and doctors who have 2 years post-registration experience. Their
duties will be extremely varied according to the country and project.
As core staff applicants must be a minimum of 25 years of age. They
will be responsible for the supervision and general well-being of
the Challengers.
A good knowledge of First Aid and A/E experience is
necessary. Many of the projects will be located in remote rural
locations, therefore the medic must be confident and competent to
work independently should the need arise. A good knowledge and preferably
experience of health and hygiene in the Tropics is desired in order
to assist in the setting up and running of base camps.
Most projects have an element of medical work and
there is often an opportunity for medics to become involved in these.
Medical projects are generally of a preventative and Primary Health
Care nature and might include educational programmes featuring topics
such as diarrhoea and rehydration, parasites, sanitation or dental
hygiene. All projects must be sustainable and curative clinics are
not undertaken. We frequently work with other organisations such
as SEE International (Surgical Eye Expeditions) coordinating eye
clinics in remote, rural locations, or working with the Pan American
Health Organisation in carrying out health surveys or assisting
in immunisation programmes. All medical projects are carried out
in conjunction with and approved by the local Ministry for Health.
Terms of Contract
Nurses and doctors are normally recruited for 3-5 month periods
on volunteer terms. YCI will meet all in country expenses such as
food, lodgings, travel expenses and return airfare from Toronto.
Volunteer staff will be expected to pay their return airfare from
their home to Toronto, personal medical insurance and personal spending
money.
