The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust is part of the National Health Service (NHS).

Monitor.

We gained Foundation Trust status on 1st August 2009.

The Walton Centre is unique to the NHS in that it is the only specialist Neurosciences Trust in the UK. Based in Liverpool, our catchment population is over 3.5 million and is drawn from Merseyside, Cheshire, parts of Lancashire and Greater Manchester, the Isle of Man and North Wales. However, with an international reputation in some areas of expertise, referrals are accepted on the basis of clinical need from any geographical area.

We provide a comprehensive range of services: neurology, neurosurgery, pain management, rehabilitation and specialist diagnostic services.

The Trust has an annual budget of c£60 million (09/10) and employs approximately 800 staff. It has developed a model of care which takes specialist services as close to patients as possible, operating outpatient clinics from 15 different sites, but concentrating highly specialised equipment and treatment at the Centre for optimum benefit.

The Walton Centre is a teaching hospital and is closely associated with the University of Liverpool Faculty of Medicine and Edge Hill College (accredited by Lancaster University). The relationship between academically acclaimed research and improving patient care is embedded throughout the Trust.

The Walton Centre is a purpose built facility, which was opened in 1998. Since that time we have continued to develop our services at the Centre and in our satellite clinics, with valued support and partnership from Merseyside neurological charities, Neurosupport and the Welsh Neurological Alliance.

Our work as a trust is based upon the strategic direction 2008 - 2013 supporting the NHS Plan established by the Department of Health. The Department of Health’s website can be found at www.doh.gov.uk and has links to the key national strategies such as the NHS Plan that guide our organisation and the wider NHS.
