Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust was established in November 1991 and became operational on April 1 1992. It was established in the second wave of NHS Trusts as part of the wider NHS reforms which were initiated by the National Health Service and Community Care Act (1990).

To provide the best possible hospital-based NHS care for the benefit of people in Mid Essex and an increasing range of specialist services for the wider population of Essex and beyond.
Principal Activities
We provide hospital-based healthcare to people who live in and around the town of Chelmsford, Witham, Maldon and Braintree and a Plastic Surgery and Burns service is provided to the wider population of Essex, North London and
beyond.
Healthcare is provided from six sites:
Broomfield Hospital, the main district general hospital, is the location of the Accident and Emergency Department, ICU, diagnostic facilities, therapy services and acute wards. Broomfield is also home to The St Andrews Centre, a specialist regional centre providing a range of Specialist Plastic Surgery and Burns services to a growing area encompassing Essex, North London, and beyond.
St John's Hospital in Chelmsford provides the balance of our acute district general hospital services including Maternity, Gynaecology, Paediatrics and outpatient services.
St Peters Hospital in Maldon, is a community-based hospital with outpatient, GP Maternity and Care of the Elderly services.
St Michael's Hospital in Braintree is a community-based hospital with outpatient and Care of the Elderly services.
William Julien Courtauld Hospital in Braintree is also a community-based hospital providing outpatient services and maternity and medical care for people under the care of their family doctor.
The Trust also provides screening for breast cancer at the Chelmsford & Essex Centre in Chelmsford town center and a range of diagnostic services.
