The Trust came into being on 1 April 1999. It has an income of approximately £90million, employs around 2,600 people and delivers services through one general hospital in Stranraer, 10 community hospitals and 15 health centres and clinics.
The Primary Care Trust encompasses an extensive range of community and primary care services.
Primary care services are delivered through the region's four Local Health Care Co-operatives (LHCCs). These are based in Wigtown with 10 GP practices; Stewartry with 6 GP practices, Nithsdale with 10 practices and Annandale & Eskdale with 10 practices. Although the GPs and staff are not directly employed by the Primary Care Trust, the close relationship means that strong links between the Trust and the LHCCs will ensure the best possible services for patients.
In the NHS in Dumfries and Galloway there are 129 GPs, 39 dentists, 16 opticians and 30 pharmacists.
The Trust Directorates
There are four directorates in the Trust, each headed by a director who is a professional in that field. The directors - as members of the Trust Board - set policy, give professional guidance, and advise the Trust Board on clinical and managerial issues. They also share in the corporate governance of the Trust, that is ensuring that the Trust meets statutory and financial obligations, as well as giving the highest possible standards of service.
