This is an Acute Services Trust with 190 beds and 349 nursing staff. The Trust gained Foundation status on 1st July 2004.
Papworth Hospital is a specialist cardiothoracic hospital, located some 12 miles west of Cambridge and seven miles from Huntingdon in the village of Papworth Everard, and is a referral centre for patients from Eastern England and the
rest of the UK.
The Hospital originally opened in 1917 and is the only specialist centre in the east of England providing a full range of cardiothoracic services. It was the pioneer of the nine currently designated centres for heart and lung transplantation in the United Kingdom.
Papworth Hospitals mission is:
'To provide a cost-effective cardiothoracic health care service to meet the changing needs of the population which the hospital serves - in East Anglia and beyond - and to strive, through research and development, for continuing
improvements in both the quality of provision of that service and health outcomes.'
The Hospital serves the population of East Anglia which is currently some 2.2 million but projected to rise to 2.5 million by the year 2008.
The Hospital is also a major provider of specialist cardiothoracic services for Bedfordshire Health and a secondary provider for North Essex, South Lincolnshire, East Hertfordshire and Northamptonshire Health Authorities.
Proximity to the M11 and the A1, and the completion of the A1-M1 link in 1994 means that the hospital is extremely well served by regional and national road networks.
Papworth is fortunate to receive a great deal of support from ex-patients and their relatives. Donations received are used to buy medical equipment and generally benefit patients at Papworth. The hospital also holds an annual fete on the second Saturday in June.
Papworth greatly values the work its volunteer helpers do, many of whom are former patients. They assist the staff in numerous ways: visiting, befriending, staffing the shop, doing trolley rounds, etc.
Some of them help at clinics by counselling patients before and after surgery, if a patient wants to talk to someone who has already had that operation. If you would like to help in any way we would welcome a call from you. Please ring Kate Lancaster on 01480 364657.
