Bedford Hospital provides a wide range of acute hospital services to the catchment population covering north and mid Bedfordshire. In 2004/5, the Trust anticipated a revenue budget of around £100m and employs around 2,600 members of staff. In 2003 the Trust had 55,000 new attendances at it's A&E department, 27,000 first outpatient appointments, 13,000 emergency admissions and 16,000 elective waiting list operations, of which around 12,000 were carried out as day case procedures. The Trust has 520 beds, including maternity, neonatal and intensive care beds.
The Trust provides the full range of general hospital specialities on an outpatient, day or inpatient basis. A number of these specialities are carried out in partnership with other hospitals, particularly the Luton & Dunstable Hospital (vascular surgery, oral-maxillo facial surgery, ENT surgery, ophthalmology) and East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust (plastic surgery). The Trust also works closely with Tertiary centres providing more specialist services, including Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge and Papworth Hospital (the provider of specialist heart services). The Trust is a member of the West Anglia Cancer Network, which seeks to organise and integrate specialist cancer care for the populations of Bedford, Peterborough, Huntingdon, Bury St Edmunds, Kings Lynn and Cambridge.
Bedford Hospital has developed a reputation for the high quality of its services, both clinical and non-clinical. It has been named as a "top 40" hospital for two years in succession by CHKS, an independent data analyst; it consistently scores well in the annual Dr Foster Good Hospital guide; it has been awarded the prestigious BBC Radio 4 Food Programme Catering Award; and it has received two Charter Marks, one for Operational Support Services, and one individually for hotel services, being named a Beacon site for cleanliness and having won the cleaning industry "Cleaner of the Year" Award. The hospital was awarded three (out of three) stars in July 2004 for its operational performance by the Government watchdog, the Commission For Health Improvement.
The hospital has steadily improved the quality of its buildings and facilities over recent years. The Cygnet Wing providing dedicated children and maternity services was opened in 1996: a new purpose-built twelve bed critical care complex was opened in March 2002: the Macmillan Primrose Centre, funded entirely by charitable donations from local people, was opened in December 2003: and Beeden House, the base for a new cardiology suite including a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, as well as a range of other diagnostic, therapeutic and treatment services, was opened in March 2005. The Trust is currently witnessing the development of a new £7m Pathology centre, which is due to be completed in October 2005.
An outline business case has also been prepared for a new Elective Treatment Centre, which will be a critical resource within the local health economy by providing an important component in the management of bed needs. This exciting new facility will deliver an increase in surgical capacity addressing some of the current capacity deficit and the increasing requirements from planned increases in population within the health community. It will also improve access, patient choice and reduce waiting times. The development will also be combined with a new integrated Education Centre.
The hospital provides services to: the main south wing site on Kempston Road and Gilbert Hitchcock House, located two miles north of the main hospital site, which provides outpatient, therapy and day services.
Bedford Hospital NHS Trust works with a network of health and social care organisations to deliver co-ordinated services to its catchment population.
