Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust is a first wave Trust, one of only four established within the West Midlands in 1991. It is situated within the Borough of Walsall, 11 miles from Birmingham and forms part of the 'Black Country' with Sandwell, Wolverhampton and Dudley.
The Trust has two hospitals, the Manor Hospital (644 beds) and Goscote Hospital which is four miles from the main site (131 beds). Between them the two hospitals cater for all general acute services including obstetrics and elderly care.
Although a major provider of acute hospital care and treatment for the population of Walsall, the Trust also attracts a significant number of patients from adjacent areas. Walsall Health Authority is the Trust's main purchaser and represents £68m of its £84m income. The Trust also has contracts with other Health Authority Purchasers including South Staffordshire, Sandwell, Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
The organisation continues to maintain a healthy financial position with no bed closures or staff redundancies. The Trust has led the way on the reduction and maintenance of low inpatient waiting times and was one of the first in the region to achieve the 9 months waiting time target. The Trust has continued to improve against the Patient Charter Standards and in the 1996/97 Performance League Tables achieved 180 stars out of 210 available - an 86% overall performance. This resulted in the Trust being the top performer in the Black Country and the fourth Acute Hospital Trust in the whole of the West Midlands.
