Description
  Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust was established in 1991. It is an Acute, Community and Mental Health Services Trust with 1248 beds and 1947 nursing staff.

Role and Function of the Organisation

One of the most comprehensive providers of secondary and tertiary health care, as well as a substantial base for education, training and research. In the area of health service research the Royal Free continues its active support for the clinical research network, a grouping of trusts and primary care organisations which have significant academic links with the Royal Free and University College Medical School.

The Royal Free aims to:

* provide the highest quality health care, both in the hospital and in the community, without charge or discrimination and within the NHS
* provide specialised services and local services complementary to primary care
* provide comprehensive health care not only for acute conditions but also for the conditions of old age, mental health rehabilitation and child development
* provide model settings for undergraduate medical education and for postgraduate specialist medical training
* develop the potential and recognise the contribution of all staff
* promote the training and continuing education of nurses and other health care professionals
* create an environment in which clinical research will flourish
* continue to improve services by systematic self evaluation and reassessment.

Population / Catchment Area

The Royal Free serves a number of health authorities in the local area; Barnet, Brent and Harrow, Camden & Islington and Enfield and Haringey. In addition to this we provide specialist services to patients from many parts of the country. The local community is a diverse one and we aim to have a workforce which is representative of the community it services. We maintain strong links with our community including many local groups.

Nursing and Midwifery

Making a Difference at the Royal Free Nursing and midwifery opportunities at the Royal Free are many and varied for both newly qualified and experienced staff. It has a reputation for being friendly and encouraging staff to develop both personally and professionally.

There are 1500 qualified Nurses and Midwives and 300 Health Care Assistants. The Nursing and Midwifery Directorate lead on Trust wide initiatives and consist of the; Nurse Director, Assistant Director of Nursing, Senior Nurse for Professional Development, Senior Nurse for Research & Development (joint appointee with Middlesex University), Nursing Information System Co-ordinator (computerised nursing system), Senior Nurse Infection Control, Clinical Nurse Specialist - Tissue Viability and Wound Management and a Project Nurse. A wide range of opportunities exist from D to I grade posts across all of the sites within the Trust.

Rotational posts / programmes are available with a structured development programme. As well as providing services to the local community, there are regional, national and international clinical services. These range from medical to surgical nursing to infectious diseases, neonatal, renal and head and neck. 7 Specialist Nurses and Nurse Practitioners continue to develop their role and include nurse led initiatives such as Colposcopy and Colorectal services.

A wide range of education and developmental opportunities exist including access to the Trust's Staff Education and Development Centre. There is access to ENB courses and other university programmes, a number of charitable funds are also available to support nursing and midwifery staff.
