Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) were formed as a result of the NHS white paper "Equality and excellence: liberating the NHS" and the subsequent health and social care bill. These set out the governments long term plans for the future of the NHS, and states how the NHS will:

  • Put patients at the heart of what the NHS does
  • Focus on improving those things that really matter to patients
  • Empower and liberate clinicians to innovate, with the freedom to focus on improving healthcare
The fundamental difference with a clinical commissioning group is that they are led by clinicians. For patients, this means that Doctors will be heavily involved in ensuring the provision of local health services, and will work more collaboratively with other organisations in making decisions about health.

Barnet CCG was approved as a pathfinder in April 2011, and held elections for Board members in June 2012. We will soon take on full responsibility for commissioning (planning and buying healthcare) across the borough to meet the needs of the local population. Commissioning looks at:
  • Understanding the health needs of the population
  • Designing and redesigning services
  • Buying the services
  • Measuring the impact of services
