Job overview

This role is an exciting opportunity to work collaboratively with other organisations within Leeds to close the health inequalities gap in cancer screening and diagnosis for people with a learning disability. This will be achieved through training of the workforce within Primary Care and other community settings, and the development of a best practice model for wider use within Primary Care.

Main duties of the job

The central aim of this work will be the maintenance and improvement the health and wellbeing of adults with learning disabilities. The successful candidate will promote the inclusion of people with learning disabilities into mainstream services, through health facilitation, education and training of key personnel. The successful candidate will;

  • Raise awareness of the health inequalities experienced by people with learning disabilities in cancer screening and diagnosis
  • Assist primary healthcare staff to consider and identify their learning disability training needs. Create identified training packages and thereafter facilitate the provision of specialist training to meet identified needs
  • Work in partnership with people with learning disabilities, voluntary agencies and carers groups in the development, implementation and monitoring of service provision
  • Provide support and advice to other individuals (with a non-clinical background) who act as health facilitators for people with learning disabilities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The work will include 2 main streams.

Firstly, the successful candidate will work collaboratively to develop appropriate training packages, co-ordinate and be involved in the delivery the training. With knowledge and skills gained through training, frontline staff in the community and primary will be able to play an increased and very important role in supporting people with learning disabilities. The candidate will be supported to lead evaluation of the training across a broad range of frontline workforce staff.

Secondly, the candidate will lead a pilot project within one Primary Care Network to develop a best practice model of the processes around cervical screening for people with learning disability, improving uptake by facilitating appropriate support in line with national guidance and practice. This can then be shared across the city and more widely across the ICS to support the LD population over a wider area.

Key elements of the work will focus on implementing the Equality Act 2010 and include using information and invitations for screening are sent in an accessible, easy read format, being sensitive to cultural differences and addressing those requirements and developing robust processes in practice following the principles of the Mental Capacity Act so that health inequalities are reduced.

The work of the post holder will expand upon existing work where there are currently gaps. Some suggestions include, not exhaustively, the co-production of accessible information for people with lived experience about 2WW referrals for possible cancers, raising awareness in professionals on spotting early signs of cancer, education of professionals supporting people with LD through the 2WW referral process, coproduction of accessible information on spotting signs of cancer and how to avoid cancer and organise specific education events for people with LD and how to empower patients and carers to escalate and communicate concerns.

The successful candidate will be supported to complete a final report of what was undertaken throughout the year, the impact of the work and how this may be implemented and embedded more widely in the future.
