Job overview

If the answer to these questions is yes – The Nurse Specialist Role within the Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology Unit may be right for you.

We are seeking to appoint an experienced gynaecology nurse who is already trained and competent at performing transvaginal as well as transabdominal scans on women who attend our Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology Unit based at Queen Charlottes and Chelsea Hospital.

We are an extremely busy unit and see approx. 6-7000 patients a year. You must have a desire to further develop the unit, possess excellent communication skills, be empathetic and have a can do attitude.

You will be expected to work independently and as part of a specialist emergency gynaecology team. You will be required to scan and counsel women undergoing pregnancy loss as well as other gynaecological emergencies, assist with training doctors to scan, assist doctors during procedures as well as patient examinations.

You will provide support to the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist in all aspects of the day to day running of the Unit and act as a resource to other professionals regarding early pregnancy, emergency gynaecology, associated treatments and issues.

Main duties of the job

  •  Provide a high quality diagnostic and treatment service for women referred to the emergency gynaecology department.
  • Provide specialist, expert episodes of nursing care based on assessment of physical, social, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs and in liaison with the MDT and other relevant health and care agencies. 
  • To act as a resource for women and the clinical and administrative teams by provision of comprehensive advice, information, teaching and training within ICHT. 
  • Undertake where appropriate, nursing research with published outcomes and updating own knowledge to promote excellence in clinical practice, and the setting of quality standards within the speciality of gynaecological emergency and early pregnancy. 
  • Contribute to formulating reports and clinical audit of own practice, service and outcomes. 
  • Active involvement in the development of the Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine service. 
  • Active Involvement in improving patient pathway and patient experience

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Recognised ultrasound qualification in early pregnancy and gynaecology
  • Teaching or Mentorship course
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant nursing/health related degree, masters or willingness to undertake
  • Independent Prescriber or willingness to undertake

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Gynaecology at band 6 level
  • Experience in scanning (transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound) patients presenting with early pregnancy or as a gynaecological emergencies
  • Experience of managing /leading a team and co-ordinating workload
  • Demonstrate the use audit to improve the quality of the service and patient care
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced clinical assessment skills

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ultrasound scanning skills
  • Competent in phlebotomy
  • Ability to translate complex specialised medical information into patient suitable language
  • Research participation at local level /Understanding of research clinical trials
