Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen to work as a band 3 within the SACT Outreach team, we deliver treatment at various locations across Manchester providing patients the opportunity to have treatment at home. We are looking for someone to join our dynamic nurse led team and work across the sites and at Oak Road Treatment centre as required delivering a high standard of care

This is a 30 hours per week role, sites are located at St Ann’s Little Hulton, New Mills, Dr Kershaw’s in Oldham, St Luke’s in Winsford, Tameside & Bury.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1.     Provide a supportive role within the SACT Services for nursing, medical and clerical Staff whilst providing rotational cover between the Chemotherapy unit and Outreach services

 

2.     Undertake the nursing care needs of patients, ensuring privacy & dignity maintained

 

3.     Write reports of care given under the covering signature of a qualified nurse

 

4.     Participate in nursing procedures appropriate to the department

 

5.     Support and assist in the induction/training of junior Health Care Assistant’s

 

6.     Rotate to cover the phlebotomy room taking requested blood from CVC’s, porta Cath and peripherally.

 

7.     Rotate to cover outpatient clinics, responsible for rooming patients, height and weight recording, observations when necessary and lease with medical staff.

 

8.     Be able to act as a team co-ordinator on the treatment floor and ensure the safe and timely through put of patients.

 

9.     Rotate to work on the treatment floor, assisting nursing staff during treatments and discharging patients.

 

10.   Rotate to work on the chemotherapy outreach peripheral clinics, including the Mobile Chemotherapy Unit. To support the nursing staff in the care of patients whilst attending these clinics.

 

11.   Safely escort patients to other areas and collect blood products /  chemotherapy from key departments

 

12.   Assist in the provision of meals / refreshments for patients whilst meeting their nutritional needs

 

13.   Help to maintain a safe environment and report faults/risks etc to the nurse in charge

 

14.   Liaise with the Estates department re repairs and maintain maintenance records

 

15.   Liaise with nurse responsible for stores/stationery and ordering and assist in the maintenance of stock levels

 

16.   Handle patients personal possessions, ensure cash and valuables kept securely

 

17.   Aid the safe storage of medicines and the return of any unused chemotherapy to pharmacy

 

18.   Assist medical staff with procedures

 

 

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

 

1.     The Health Care Assistant is responsible for their own personal development and maintaining a personal development plan

 

2.     Annually attend all mandatory study days including Principles and Practice of Intravenous Skills, Infection control, Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, moving and handling and fire safety

 

3.     Annually update level one IV skills, including phlebotomy,

Central line/ Peripheral Inserted Central Catheter management and 

Cannula care

 

4.     To participate in and work towards the completion of the Christie Care Certificate.

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level II in care or equivalent experience

  • Care Certificate

Experience
