An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen within the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust for an Oncology  Research Nurse. The team are looking for a self-motivated, dynamic and adaptable individual who is clinically confident. The focus of this role will be to develop the individual nurse in the speciality of  Oncology  Research working with multiple tumour sites .

This post will provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to significantly develop their research/clinical skills and knowledge base.

Main duties of the job

You will work across a range of research studies including investigational medication  studies, observational research and clinical interventions as well as supporting and managing patients care within the Oncology Department.

Well-developed skills and experience in acute areas with an interest in developing your career in this specialised area will be an advantage, however,  no research experience is necessary.  

Under the direction of the Lead Consultants, Registrars, Research Doctors and Senior Research Nurses, you will participate in the recruitment and follow up of patients to research studies attending Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust  You will be responsible for undertaking study related procedures (as appropriate) whilst adhering to the protocol. You will be responsible for the assessment, planning and on-going care and safety of the Oncology  research participants and will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team, referring patients for specialist care as needed. An important aspect of the role will be the maintenance of highly accurate and comprehensive records of data derived from the research studies. The post holder will be required to work autonomously with supervision and guidance of the Senior Research Nurses .

The position will enable the post holder to gain clinical knowledge and skills within the speciality by  working closely with the consultants and specialist nurses in the clinical areas and with members of the multidisciplinary team throughout the trust. The post will allow development of both specialist oncology and research skills under the guidance of the oncology research  teams. We are keen to invest in and develop our staff and a variety of training opportunities will be provided.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work with the Research Team to support the safe conduct of clinical trials in accordance with the UK Clinical Trials Regulations and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and provide assurance that the rights, safety and wellbeing of trial participants are protected. The role will, support the feasibility, costing and set up of research studies and assist in the recruitment of participants into observational and interventional research studies.

The post holder will Lead on observational and interventional studies as deemed appropriate and allocated by their line manager. The post holder will be accountable for the assessment, planning, organisation and on-going care of research participants, whilst maximising compliance with study/trial protocol Assist with the training of professional staff ensuring compliance to protocol and practice guidelines.

The post holder will use relevant knowledge to perform research procedures in accordance with study protocols and extend this experience to support others in the research team and other health care professionals where appropriate. The post aims to co-ordinate services with acute, primary and community care, the main purpose being recruitment and follow-up of research participants in various hospitals/settings. Therefore there is a need to be geographically mobile and working out of hours as and when necessitated, which on occasion may include for early phase studies, weekends and nights.
