We are a bespoke stroke unit, opened September 2021, which comprises of 6 acute beds and 25 rehabilitation beds specialising in acute stroke care and rehabilitation. We enjoy a close relationship with the Multi-disciplinary team of Stroke Clinicians, Clinical nurse Specialists, Advanced care Practitioners, Clinicians, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language therapists and Dieticians.
Main duties of the job
You will be a clinical leader who will be encouraged and supported to proactively engage with these professions to provide the best quality care and outcomes for our patients. You will need to have excellent communication skills, leadership skills and participate in providing and sharing information throughout the day, to patients and their relatives, at board rounds and at regular ward multidisciplinary meetings.
You will support all team members, through a proactive approach, to manage your daily workload and develop your delegation skills. Excellent communication and time management skills are a necessity to this position. You will be supported to develop your nursing skills, and you will be supported to undertake additional training and study days.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Essential criteria
- Minimum 12 months experience at band 5
- Degree or equivalent nurse qualification
- Holds appropriate clinical skills such as venepuncture and cannulation
- Awareness of governance and patient safety issues within stroke
- Show insight into the stroke pathway from admission to discharge and beyond
Desirable criteria
- Worked previously with stroke patients
- Evidence of previous leadership experience or qualification
- Previous experience of MDT working
- Previous experience of managing staff issues such as sickness, roster
