Urgent Care Practitioner / Emergency Nurse Practitioner

Job overview

This is band 6 fixed term, maternity cover post is for 12 months. it is ideally suited to a nurse or other registered HCP with relevant  qualifications already working in urgent treatment centre / MIU / emergency dept / acute care as an autonomous practitioner with the ability to assess, diagnose, treat patients (adults and children) presenting with range of minor injury and  illness. This will include working shifts from 0800hrs to 2100hrs, 7 days a week, including weekends & PH. 

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Assessment and diagnostic reasoning skills for patients presenting with minor injuries / minor illness

Xray requesting and interpretation 

Plastering and splinting

Wound closure including suturing 

Use of PGDs  

discharge and referral skills

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Work without direct supervision: assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate treatment/interventions and care for patients presenting with an undifferentiated diagnosis
  • Clinically examine and assess patient needs from a physiological and psychological perspective, and plan clinical care accordingly
  • When appropriate prescribe medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs and in accordance with evidence-based practice as directed by MIU protocols and patient group directives.
  • Provide information and advice on prescribed or over-the-counter medication and any possible side-effects
  • Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care
  • Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles, and apply principles of self-care
  • Follow the algorithm for conditions where there is no specific protocol; requiring the post holder to use initiative and their specialist training.
  • Take charge during allocated shifts and assist with the smooth running and operational organization of the unit
  • Appropriately refer/signpost those patients attending the MIU whose conditions might exclude them from treatment as directed by MIU protocols
  • Support the collection of accurate data for legal and local requirements
  • Ensure own documentation is completed to the MIU agreed standard/protocol
  • Monitoring that personal NMC/HCPC registration is always up-to-date
  • Role model/mentor for junior staff, teaching basic and post-basic learners (nursing/ecp/medical students) and incorporating them into a safe and manageable working environment
  • Ordering pharmacy, monitoring stock levels, showing an awareness of budgetary restraints; make maximum use of resources, time, and equipment. Ensure any defect is reported and monitor repairs
  • To be aware of and abide by Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust approved policies, i.e. adult/child safeguarding, infection control, standards and quality initiatives
  • The post holder is required to take reasonable care for his/her own health & safety and that of other persons who may be affected by his/her acts or omissions.
