Job overview

To provide effective patient care whilst working as a member of the nursing team across East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will be responsible as a member of the team for the maintenance of a high standard of patient care in response to service needs, through a 24-hour period and that day surgery services are utilised efficiently and effectively. Assist in the implementation of training and development needs of the multidisciplinary team. Newly qualified staff are required to undertake Trust six-month Preceptorship period which may be extended to one year by the department.

Responsibility for supporting junior colleagues and health care assistants within the team. Within their own section of the unit provide assistance to medical staff ensuring all equipment is available and safe to use. Regularly responsible for providing training In own discipline/practical training or undertaking basic workplace assessments. Assist with the development of specialised programmes of care/care packages and provide highly specialised advice concerning the care or treatment of patients to patients and staff

Main duties of the job

Provide professional leadership, advice and guidance to junior practitioners and healthcare assistants and foster collaborative partnerships with other disciplines.

  • Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives, ensuring accurate and seamless information is conveyed and documented
  • Assist in the maintenance and monitoring of agreed standards, ensuring that any shortfall is brought to the attention of the line manager
  • Ensure that all quality initiatives within the clinical environment are adhered to and that the highest standards of care are maintained at all times.
  • Assist in the development of clinical protocols ensuring that these are reviewed in accordance with the needs of the service in conjunction with the Ward/Unit manager
  • Ensure that accurate and legible patient records are kept in line with professional and legal requirements.
  • Promote and maintain effective working relationships and communications with consultants, medical staff, nurse colleagues and other multi-agency professionals.
