If you are motivated to act as the child's advocate, to educate children, parents and staff, to work with external agencies and help ensure a smooth  pathway to more specialised care for the child and young person as needed, then come and join the team at Maidstone and Tunbridge wells hospital.

We have an opportunity for a  talented and experienced Paediatric or Registered Mental Health  or Learning Disability nurse to join our team to act as a Paediatric Mental Health Liaison Nurse.  You will be joining  another full time band 6 nurse currently in this role based on the inpatient unit Hedgehog. You will be supported by a whole paediatric teams of various specialities across the unit.

Main duties of the job

Reviewing children and young people with mental health problems in the Emergency Departments, Ambulatory Units and Acute Childrens wards whilst receiving medical care and/or awaiting a mental health assessment.  Supporting staff around the management of children and young people with mental health related conditions. You will provide relevant training, supervision / debriefing and support to staff and act as the interface between the Emergency departments, Ambulatory Units, Childrens wards, NELFT and the CAMHS Service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Once your pre-employment checks have been completed you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date which will be in line with one of our Corporate Inductions.

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics.  The programme is full-time (please email [email protected] if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service Check at Enhanced Level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Must have proven experience at appropriate level involving care of acute paediatrics
  • Must have post qualification experience / knowledge base of working with children and young people who have a mental health illness
  • Must have knowledge of Mental Health Legislation, including the Equality Act, Medical Records Act, Data Protection Act, Mental Health Act 1983 (updated by the 2007 Act)
  • Proven management and safeguarding experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance
  • Knowledge of local community and understanding of a multi-cultural, racially diverse population
  • Knowledge of current professional issues relating to nursing
  • Understanding of equal opportunities
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration study
  • Experience working for CAMHS within an acute mental health team – community or inpatient service

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent or experience
  • RMN/RSCN/RN Child
  • Evidence of a relevant post-registration professional development
  • Teaching/ Assessing Qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist course relevant to post

Essential criteria
  • Ability to support and manage a case-load of patients including assessment, planning, monitoring and evaluation, including providing health promotion and education to patients and carers
  • Ability to organise and deliver a high standard of evidence based clinical nursing care
  • Ability to demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • De-escalation management of situations
  • Implementation of staff training packages / sessions
