We are a 10 bedded  Orthopaedic Trauma  Ward based in a busy Trauma Unit within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

The role will involve being the perfect role model and leader across day & night rotation to support the team and maintain an effective ward.

Your role will be to support the Ward Manager, to ensure the provision of excellent care and compassion for all our patients who present with unique trauma injuries and visitors to the ward. You will be responsible for ensuring the planning, delivery and evaluation of care to meet the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of patients, whilst providing leadership and direction to the team. You will also be responsible for completing appraisals, maintaining training rates, roster production and supporting our Team to develop to their full potential.

Main duties of the job

You will have the ability to support the ward manager in providing a team approach in achieving high standards of safe care and constant support for junior staff and students in practice.

You must have experience of working as band 5 or 6  and be able to demonstrate clinical knowledge and skills in caring for acutely ill patients. You will be a clinical role model and have a willingness to develop the team as well as your own professional growth.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Support the Ward Manager/Charge Nurse or Matron in ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for within or by the ward, department, service or team.
  • Ensure a high standard of nursing is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and National standards and evidence based guidelines.
  • Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.
  • Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.
  • Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice
  • To participate in education and training of junior staff.

Person specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • 2 years post registration with orthopaedics and leadership knowledge
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and safeguarding and the relevance to practice
  • Experience of implementing changes to benefit patients and improve nursing practice
  • Tracheostomy care experience
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Research and Development

Qualifications & Education

  • Appropriate NMC Registration
  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing
  • NMC recognised Mentorship qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional education or development in area of speciality
