At East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust our vision is to be widely recognised for providing safe, personal and effective care.  We currently provide high quality services and treat over 600,000 people across East Lancashire and the surrounding area. We employ over 9,500 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work.

Job overview

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced, motivated and reliable individual to join our team on the Acute Stroke Unit at Royal Blackburn Hospital as a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse.
The ward is busy, but is calm well organised, and receptive to ongoing development. The Acute Stroke Unit is looking for a band 6 to join the leadership team and to work with the Ward Manager to uphold the ethos of the ward whilst ensuring continued development of both staff and service. As the band 6, you will liaise closely with the ward Manager, to ensure that the values of the ward and those of the Trust are upheld.
The candidate would require acute stroke experience, to be able to offer support to junior members of the team. The successful candidate will be required to offer support and guidance on managing complex stroke medication therapies such as  thrombolysis care, Labetalol and GTN infusions and telemetry monitoring.

Main duties of the job

The acute Stroke Unit embraces a multi-disciplinary approach between  physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and the stroke specialist nursing team working closely together to provide a high standard of safe, personal and effective care. The ward team is well established and focused.

The successful candidates will be registered with a General Nurse qualification and be on the NMC Register and will demonstrate the Trust’s values at all times ensuring the provision of quality nursing care. They must have the initiative to adapt to the changing demands of the service and be able to contribute to the development of service provision. They will need to be experienced in mentoring student nurses, holding a relevant mentorship and/or teaching qualification and be supportive of junior members of the team, and have relevant experience at Band 5 enabling them to be confident to lead the team in a shift co-ordinator role. Ability to cover the department and provide reasonable flexibility in terms of hours worked, including varying shift patterns across days and nights will be expected.

The successful applicant will be committed to continuously striving to improve the patient experience and outcome at every opportunity utilising a person centred approach.

Working for our organisation

The Medicine for Older People directorate’s primary focus is to provide care for our older population who may have multiple co morbidities and require complex care. We provide a comprehensive service including Stroke, Frailty, Dementia and specialist care of older persons.

We have 8 wards in total which includes 7 acute ward on the Royal Blackburn Hospital site and one specialist stroke rehabilitation ward at Pendle community Hospital. In January 2019 the Trust opened an Older Persons Rapid Assessment (OPRA) Unit, providing multidisciplinary comprehensive geriatric assessment as part of a developing acute frailty pathway. The OPRA Unit has 9 assessment areas and a 38 bedded ward. This forms our new Frailty Unit with consultant board rounds throughout the day and full Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) input. The aim of the unit is minimise hospital stay and maximise opportunities for recovery and independent living.

We are proud of our stroke services and our achievements within the Stroke Sentinel National Audit Programme (SSNAP) and we continue to develop and strengthen our stroke pathway to ensure patients receive a high standard of care in the right environment. Within this provision will be the development of a hyper acute stroke care unit, delivering Thrombolysis and Acute stroke care and stroke Rehabilitation.
