Job overview

We are pleased to announce that an opportunity for an experienced RMN Band 6 and above, to lead, as an interim ward manager, our Multi-Disciplinary Team on our adult acute inpatient ward.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and highly motivated nurse who is; committed, caring, compassionate, have good leadership and problem solving skills, excellent communication skills, the ability to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and a positive attitude to service developments and quality improvement. 

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the operational management of clinical area.
  • Lead and effectively manage the ward nursing team.
  • Ensure high standards of evidence-based, patient centered care are maintained.
  • To establish and maintain systems for clinical governance.
  • To effectively and efficiently manage ward budget and resources.
  • To promote good communication within the team and with external agencies.

Working for our organisation

Rosa Parks Ward is an 18-bedded male acute ward, currently based at Lambeth Hospital but will soon move to New Douglas Bennet House in Maudsley Hospital. 

The multi-disciplinary team is dynamic and diverse, including RMNs, CSWs, an OT, doctors and a consultant who work closely to support patients on their recovery journey. Patients also have access to a psychology and art therapy while on the ward.

The post-holder will also be responsible for:

  • Deputising for the Clinical Service Lead as required.
  • Undertaking site wide co-ordination roles as required, eg. DSN.
  • Establishing and building on excellent working relationships between other services within and external to the Directorate.
  • Ensuring that systems are in place which invite service users and their carers to comment on the quality of services they receive.
  • Implementation of the complaints procedure including investigation, response, and resolution.

Ensuring that their line manager is kept informed of all developments and changes within the ward environment.

  • The safe storage and administration of medications.
  • The creation and maintenance of an environment which is conducive to learning and which meets the educational standards required by Educational Institutions whose students are placed on the ward. The post-holder will be expected to facilitate actively the ward’s involvement in the training and education of staff from a variety of disciplines.
  • Participating in projects within the Unit and Trust as required by the senior management of the Directorate.

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RMN/RMNLD
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • SLTP Training
  • Degree or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • RGN
  • Management course.
  • Mentorship Course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant years’ experience of managing clinical practice at Band 6.
  • Experience of providing clinical and managerial supervision
  • Experience of working in a multicultural environment and knowledge of methods to develop culturally sensitive practice
  • Experience of implementing and monitoring standards of care.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with other client groups and of using a variety of models and approaches to care
  • Experience of implementing significant changes in working practices
  • Experience of project management

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist clinical knowledge relevant to the service, including evidence based practice
  • Working knowledge of all relevant legislation associated with acute mental health care, including MHA, CPA procedures, Human Rights Act, NSF, Child Protection and NHS Plan.
  • Understanding of the role and function of other organisations providing services to people with mental ill-health.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of performance management procedures
