Job overview

The Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) is the largest and oldest gender clinic in the UK, dating back to 1966. We accept referrals from all over the UK for adults with issues related to gender. We accept referrals for patients who are aged 17 years and older onto our waiting list. Patients will not be offered an appointment before their 18th birthday.

We are a multi-disciplinary team, including psychologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists, speech and language therapists, and nurses. We work together to provide holistic gender care, focusing on the biological/medical, psychological and social aspects of gender.

The role of the Gender Clinical Lead Nurse provides clinical leadership and management to the GIC nurses with interface other gender clinics. The lead nurse will focus on the development of the GIC nursing profession and support quality improvement. They will also be responsible for the nursing pathway development, working alongside the Clinical Director This will involve helping to develop and deliver the clinical strategy through co-production with service users, carers and staff.

This role gives a fantastic opportunity to develop the nursing workforce within the service to enhance patient care and quality. 

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the lead nurse will be to support the Clinical Director, Nursing directorate, Associate Director of Quality Improvement and Clinical Governance and Clinical Operations Director to deliver the ambitious quality improvement projects and the clinical strategy.

* The lead nurse will be employed as a practicing clinician.

* Undertake clinical risk assessments, harm reviews, and management plans that ensure the patient accesses the appropriate secondary care service for their needs where indicated.

* Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records in line with the Data Protection Act, relevant Trust Policies, and professional body recommendations.

* Participate in clinical audits.

* Lead and contribute to the evolving and transformative GIC clinical pathways this includes leading the delivery and governance of co-production of clinical pathways.

* Support the operations team in managing clinical financial and operational performance of nurses.

* Implementing clinical policies, both local and national, including the clinical strategy.

* Attend GIC Executive meeting, and Senior Leadership meetings as required.

* Support research projects, grow research capability and rapidly implement research findings.

* Manage relationships with partners, service users and carers.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registration as a Nurse with the NMC (RMN)
  • Degree/Masters -level education or equivalent
  • Mentorship (or equivalent) qualification
  • Evidence of master’s degree or equivalent Post Graduate Clinical or Management experience in e.g., CYP, IAPT, and other psychological and psychotherapeutic modalities
Desirable criteria
  • Independent nurse prescriber qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial clinical experience in a relevant work setting, including experience with challenging patient populations requiring skilled and complex assessments and interventions.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Capacity to work sensitively and appropriately within a client and professional group with diverse gender identity and sexuality and of ethnically diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in providing supervision, teaching, and consultation regarding overly complex clinical matters in a multidisciplinary context.
  • Previous experience in a management and or leadership role
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with QI methodology

Skills

Essential criteria
  • A highly developed ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to convey highly complex and clinically sensitive information to family members of all ages, students, and a wide range of professional people within and outside the NHS.
  • The ability to effectively manage a large caseload.
  • Confident use of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Good awareness of appropriate clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of high-quality clinical practice
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal skills, and authority, able to foster and manage relationships across team and service boundaries.
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced physical health assessment skills

  • A comprehensive understanding of the changing NHS and Social Care environment and the challenges it faces.
  • Ability to look beyond structures, ways of working, boundaries and organizations to produce more effective and innovative service delivery and partnership.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice
  • Knowledge of Adult and child safeguarding procedures and processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of trans-specific issues.
