Job overview

Our busy Children’s Department covers two sites – Queens Hospital in Romford and King George’s Hospital in Ilford. We deliver a comprehensive range of general medical and surgical services to our local population and have two inpatient wards, one with a co-located 4 bedded HDU, we also have 2 CYPAU's across the sites CYPAU -QH and Dahlia at KGH). There is a day unit with a POSCU and haematology service, two outpatients departments with a GP ‘hot clinic’, a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and a Children’s Community Nursing team.

Our well established 32 cot level 2 NICU has both community and outreach teams to support babies on discharge.

We have two ED’s for children, one on each site, and their combined attendances are among the busiest in the country with over 62,000 children’s attendances each year.

You’ll also be playing your part in preparing the NHS for the future. We’re proud to be one of only five Trusts in the country to secure a place on the ground-breaking Virginia Mason Institute Programme to transform patient care, and we’re also one of eight new, national Vanguard sites spearheading transformational change in urgent and emergency care.

Applications are then invited to apply for our Newly Qualified Band 5 to apply for 12 month rotation programme across Tropical Lagoon, NICU and Children Emergency Department. Following the rotation successful candidates will be interviewed and places into permanent roles within one of these areas.  The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills, an ability to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and has a positive attitude to service developments. So if you are an enthusiastic, dynamic and highly motivated nurse who is committed, caring and compassionate come and join our fantastic team. Your professional development will be encouraged and supported.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals with excellent communication skills, the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and demonstrate PRIDE values and behaviours through their work.

You must be passionate and willing to promote a high-quality care service as the basis of the department's philosophy whilst supporting patients and their needs.

Here at BHRUT, we provide an Excellent  Preceptorship Programme to all our Newly Qualified nurses and ensure that they have access to great opportunities for personal and professional development. Furthermore, our award-winning Senior Intern team are committed to pastorally supporting our Newly Qualified nurses

We believe this is a great next step for you to develop your nursing career with us and your chance to be part of something amazing.

Working for our organisation

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we’re proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
