An opportunity  for a  permanent  band 6 Deputy Ward Manager nurse is has become vacant on ward 5C at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, one site of the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

You will be part of the 5C family which prides itself on professionalism, teamwork and patient and colleague support. Ward 5C is a specialist surgical ward specifically in UGI & Liver surgery which includes an enhanced recovery unit GERU specialises in liver surgery, total gastrectomy's & esophagectomy's  and all other kinds of general surgery.

This post is for a Deputy Ward Manager to work alongside the ward manager to help with nursing leadership on ward 5C. You will have excellent clinical and communication skills being able to give practical guidance to nursing staff, along with direction and support to the multidisciplinary team. In addition the post holder will be supporting the ward manager in ensuring good practice by taking part in audit, facilitating learning and development of nursing staff, and general management required to run a busy surgical ward.

Experience in surgical nursing is a necessity, UGI experience is an advantage.

Minimum of 2 years experience as band 5 is essential.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Co-ordination of the ward/department on a day to day basis including planning, allocation and evaluation of work carried out by teams or individuals and self.
  • Provide specialist knowledge to all Nursing staff on the ward/ department particularly in UGI post operative care, use of pain machines (such as rectus sheath PCA etc) and chest drains these skills are also required.
  • Will promote a critical, analytical approach to the delivery of nursing care ensuring that the ward/ department environment is responsive to current issues.
  • In support of the ward/ department manager will assist in the review and update of procedures and protocols relating to the care of patients
  • Develop methods for identifying, maintaining and improving the quality of patient care through facilitation of best practice and clinical benchmarking.
  • Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients/clients.
  • Explore and undertake expanded practice to optimise patient care as required within specialist area, in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Knowledge of an UGI specified diet is crucial as well as artificial feeding is also a must. This is due to the nature of the surgery the patient receive as we take nutrition to be pivotal in the patients post operative care. 
  • Teach and guide all grades of staff to be the best that they can be to deliver the best care possible in the safest way possible.
