Band 7 (annex 21/U) subject to experience

For trainees covered by paragraph 2(iii), where periods of training last for between one and four years, pay will be adjusted as follows:

(i) up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of
the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate;
(ii) more than one but less than two years prior to completion of
training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum of the qualified
(iii) more than two but less than three years prior to completion of
training: 65 per cent of the pay band maximum for the qualified
(iv) more than three years from completion of training: 60 per cent of
the pay band maximum for the qualified rate.

This new position offers an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly developing and expanding Gastroenterology team. The post holder will take on the new role of Nutrition Specialist Nurse at St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust. He/she will be working as part of the gastroenterology clinical team and provide specialist care and support for patients receiving artificial nutrition support. The post holder will assist in the delivery of nutritional services throughout the Trust, working within the multidisciplinary team supporting medical, nursing and other clinical colleagues to ensure the quality of nutritional care to patients is maximised.

We are seeking a registered nurse who is enthusiastic, self-motivated and a great team player with a drive and committed to this specialized area. The post holder will be instrumental in further developing the current nutrition service and as such the post-holder will contribute to nutrition related clinical governance overseeing relevant audits as well as participating in the nutrition steering group.

The specialist nurse will be involved in the development of nutrition related protocols, guidelines, policies and care pathways. The post will further improve multi-professional working by being involved in staff education including leading nutrition link nurse meetings and educating and disseminating in relation to national and local nutritional practice guidelines and policies.

This demanding role will require excellent time management, organizational and communication skills. The successful candidate must be able to prioritise their own workload and will require a flexible approach to their role. The applicant’s clinical work will revolve around the provision of artificial nutrition and as such he/she will work with the nutrition support team which consists of 2 consultant Gastroenterologists, 1 ITU consultant, 1 general surgical consultant, an aseptics pharmacist and a specialist nutrition team dietician. Thus clinical work will involve participation in nutritional MDTs and nutritional outpatient clinics, provision of bleep accessible support to wards in relation to nutrition support and provision of a telephone helpline for outpatients on artificial nutrition. In this role the post holder will support insertion of intravenous access devices and gastrostomy tubes for nutrition support.

The post holder will need to be able to work to tight deadlines and withstand the pressure of a busy department and be able to work independently as well as part of the team.
