Job overview

Adferiad provides an ideal setting for Registered Nurses who will enhance their clinical and managerial skills or for newly qualified staff to gain experience of an acute setting. This post would enable applicants to access the Journey of Excellence (JoE) professional development programme aligned to the learning and development opportunities offered within the Health Board.


You will need to demonstrate a commitment to delivering high quality person centred care with the ability to communication and work effectively with patients, carers and other professionals. A good understanding of risk management and the Care Treatment Plan (CTP) process is desirable. Ability to work as part of a team with high levels of motivation and enthusiasm for working in a demanding but rewarding service is essential. You will be joining a team that is passionate and focused on achieving excellence in care delivery.


The successful candidate must be willing to work a shift pattern covering a 24-hour period and to undertake PMVA training.

Main duties of the job

A vacancy has arisen within the Adult Inpatient Services at Adferiad ward based in St Cadocs Hospital. Flexible working patterns and hours are available including 12 hour shifts. 

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Registered Mental Health Nurse to join our acute mental health unit. The unit provides assessment, treatment and stabilisation of patients with mental health problems.

Adferiad Ward is a 22-bedded acute mental health unit serving Newport and lower Monmouthshire Boroughs for patients from the age of 18 years to 65 years. The unit works closely with the Home Treatment Team who gate keep admissions and facilitate the patients early discharge back to the community. The unit also works closely with the two Community Mental Health teams, Assertive Outreach Team and Early Intervention Teams from the catchment area.
Adferiad ward also functions as the out of hours assessment unit for ABUHB from midnight to 08:00am and on weekends. Any person requiring assessment within this time come to Talygarn.  The ward is also situated opposite the Section 136 Assessment centre/suite. 

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
