Job overview

As a Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse you will be required to work very closely with the Ward Sister to support the ward team delivering a high standards of evidence based care to our patients.

As nurse in charge you will be required to have a clinical overview of the ward, support the ward team, co-ordinate shifts and have a good knowledge and understanding of operational pressures.

There will be a requirement to fulfill some of the day to day management tasks as part of your role.

Digestive Diseases Unit (DDU) is an acute Gastroenterology/Medical 20 bedded ward, with also a Nurse led outpatient clinic attached which allows patients with gastro related conditions such as Crohn's/Ulcerative Colitis, IBD, liver patients to be treated, preventing patient admission. The outpatients clinic also serves as a safety net to enable the consultant to review patients who are discharged from the main ward if the need requires.

You will be required to have a high level of knowledge around capacity and clinical governance. Expertise and a sound knowledge in the day to day care and management of all patients admitted to the ward coupled with working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to assist with safe discharges from the hospital setting. Working within this fast paced environment will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your clinical, managerial and leadership skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role of the Deputy Sister is to work proactively to support the Ward Sister in the delivery of high quality safe, patient focused evidence based care and a positive patient experience. Primarily this will be achieved through effective role modelling, instilling professional behaviors, adhering to the Trusts core care values alongside the deployment of practice development and educational methodologies. This is to reassure that all staff are developed and supported to be competent and confident within their roles.

As Nurse in charge of a shift your main focus will be to ensure adequate staffing levels are met to meet the need of the service. You will work closely with the Consultant and ward multidisciplinary team leading the ward morning board round and accompanying the medical team on ward round. The ward operates the consultant of the week model which promotes continuity of care. Ensure the completion of safe care, co-ordinate the shift using effective leadership, communication and delegation skills to support in facilitating safe discharges.

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Nursing Diploma/Degree

  • Teaching/assessing Qualification
  • Evidence of continued professional development

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous ward experience (2 Years)
  • Identification, assessment and development of patient needs and development of programmes of care
  • Dealing with distressed people
  • Sound knowledge of current nursing issues
Desirable criteria
  • Experience with patient flow and capacity
  • Experience of Gastroenterology Nursing

  • Able to make judgements based on evidence based practice and translate this for use in the ward environment
