Job overview

Due to age extension and changes within the team an exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Somerset Bowel Cancer Screening Programme as a Specialist Screening Practitioner on a permanent contract. You will be joining a team of five Specialist Screening Practitioners covering the Somerset population. 

You will be required to travel off site to cover Yeovil when required. This is a Band 6 post, and you will be required to complete a mandatory degree/masters module Specialist Screening Practitioner course, this is funded by the Screening Centre/Trust.

We are looking to recruit a motivated, enthusiastic and flexible team player to join the nursing staff as a Specialist Screening Practitioner over 3-4 days per week (30 hrs). The role is varied and ranges from conducting nurse led clinic’s attending screening colonoscopy lists, giving results, breaking bad news and generally supporting patients throughout their screening pathway.

You will be expected to assist with health promotion activities and undertaking audits. You will be required to liaise with several specialities and all members of the multi disciplinary team regarding a patient's care to ensure the safest and highest quality of care is delivered to patients within the Programme.

Main duties of the job

Nurse led clinics involving pre-assessment/suitability for Screening procedures:

  • Complex clinical decision making 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Excellent I.T skills
  • Understanding of Screening pathways
  • Ability to liaise with all members of the Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) confidently
  • Attend and support in Screening Endoscopy lists
  • Enter specific data onto the Bowel Cancer Screening System (BCSS)
  • Interpret complex histology
  • Deliver significant/life changing news
  • Attend mandatory training courses
  • Audit
  • Health promotion

The post holder will be expected to successfully complete the mandatory ‘NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Course’ at John Moores University, Liverpool, this is a 40 credit (Degree) or 20 credit master’s module. Enrolment onto the course should take place within the first year of commencement in post.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Degree in Nursing or working towards
  • Expert communication skills, verbally and written
  • Able to perform assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of specialist nursing care
  • UK driving licence with ability and willingness to travel across Trust sites as required
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist Screening Practitioner Module
  • Experience in health promotion/public health initiatives
