Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a nurse/ODP to join our Senior Leadership team in Theatres as a Theatre Matron. You will be working alongside the current Theatre Matron, Clinical Service Manager and our Surgical Matrons as part of the Surgical Directorate leadership team.

 Yeovil Foundation Trust (YDH) and Somerset Foundation Trust.  merged in 2023.  Whilst this post is based at YDH there will be an expectation that the successful candidate will work  across site at both YDH and  Musgrove Park Hospital (MPH).

At YDH there are 9 theatres, 4 in out main theatre suite,  2 in day surgery, a stand alone  modular  theatre and 2 in our women's hospital. You will work alongside our Band 7 team leaders to provide safe patient care and efficient utilisation of the theatre capacity. Our specialties include Orthopaedic, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, ENT, Maxillo Facial and Maternity. The Theatre Matron role requires you be highly self-motivated; possess strong clinical leadership skills with a knowledge base in theatres or one that is highly transferable.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to:

  • have excellent negotiation, influencing and communication skills and be able to demonstrate mature problem solving skills.
  • To act as a clinical expert to the Theatre services providing expert, professional, strategic and clinical operational support and advice on complex issues
  • Play an active role in the Theatre senior leadership Triumvirate and work collaboratively with the Surgical Directorate Triumvirate in the continued development of the future Theatre Strategic Plan.
  • To provide professional and comprehensive advice to Clinical managers and staff across the Theatre services which supports the day to day running of theatres and performance improvement.
  • To be called upon to project manage and monitor specific projects to support service development within the Theatres.
  • You will be responsible overseeing staffing needs, managing establishment requirements, supervising the work of the practice development team to provide a safe skilled theatre team.

In 2025 we will see the opening of a 5th theatre in our main theatre suite in YDH.   In  MPH also in 2025 our  new Surgical Centre housing 8 new theatres including 2 Integrated Interventional Radiology theatres to complement our other 12 theatres within the Acute Trust will open.. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a Matron your role is to provide excellent standards of patient care within the resources available. The Matron will be supported by key members of the Directorate Operational Team, and will provide clinical leadership to ensure the delivery of high quality services to all services users in accordance with agreed objective’s, targets, quality standards, controls and resource constraints.

To work in collaboration with the Surgical and Critical Care Triumvirate, Clinical Service Managers, Clinical Matrons, Clinical Nurse/OPD Managers and the governance team to provide clinical leadership to programmes of work aligned to nursing clinical / professional standards and governance within the Surgical Services.

Take delegated responsibility for ensuring compliance with national / regulatory standards for effective complaints and patient experience management and all activities related to patient experience.

To provide clinical and managerial leadership to the surgical directorate governance support team to ensure effective systems and processes and programmes of work are in place to ensure the most efficient uses of resources are delivered in alignment with national and local guidance.

Work collaboratively as a Matron group across both acute sites providing consistent clinical leadership presence, this may involve working at another Trust site other than that of your substantive base.

  • Master’s level qualification or working towards or evidence of advanced practice
