Bereavement Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead, develop and coordinate Bereavement Care at Sheffield Children's Foundation Trust.  This is a new post within the organisation with the aim of supporting /enabling all healthcare professionals within the Trust in offering practical and emotional support to families/carers before or after the death of a loved one.

The post holder will be a compassionate, accountable practitioner who treats all colleagues, patients and their families with respect and seeks to deliver excellence in their role.  They will share the Trust values and be committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.

  • To deliver Safe, Personal, Effective and Compassionate Care to patients and their families, ensuring empathy and quality is everyone’s prime objective.
  • To be part of the resource of the Trust in developing and delivering excellence in bereavement care relating to the needs of patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Lead, develop and coordinate the Bereavement Care.
  • Responsible for the educational requirements and acting as an expert resource to the organisation to support in the delivery of Safe, Personal and Effective patient focused care, and ensuring that all staff work in a professional manner.
  • Through effective clinical leadership and role modelling, be able to inspire, motivate and empower others. This will require the post holder to be highly visible and to have an accessible approach for patients, their relatives / carers and staff.
  • This is a senior role within the organisation and there is an expectation that the post holder will fully participate in clinical and professional leadership.
  • Responsible for the setting and monitoring of professional standards within bereavement care and the delivery of all aspects of care ensuring trust policies and procedures are adhered to protect patients’ safety and well-being at all times.
  • Be responsible for creating a dynamic learning environment for all staff, overseeing the provision of education, research and practice development.

Oversee the delivery of a Trust wide bereavement service to families and colleagues. This includes responsibility for the implementation of clinical policies, guidance, and standards to enhance the quality of care and service around death and bereavement for families.
To act as a keyworker (when applicable) to families who have experienced a death.
Set professional standards within bereavement care and the delivery of all aspects of care ensuring Trust policies and procedures are followed to protect safety and wellbeing at all times.
To line manage the Bereavement Coordinator including responsibility for wellbeing, appraisal, mandatory training, performance and attendance at work. 
Ensure every bereaved family has ongoing bereavement support,facilitating memory making and signposting to other support available. 
Create standard operating procedures and guidelines related to bereavement support.                                                                                                                    Ensure colleagues working with bereaved families follow these procedures through developing training and education programmes.
Provide leadership to colleagues acting as a source of expert advice regarding bereavement support. 
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to bring best practice into the Trust to enhance the service provided.
Undertake regular audits to evaluate the effectiveness of the service, providing reports to the executive team detailing the findings, impact, and outcomes, ensuring continuous improvement and adherence to clinical 
governance standards.
Work together in partnership with local authorities to manage and support families, linking with schools and other education providers and social work to provide guidance and advice on available services.
Share best practice and lessons learned with partners through presentations at conferences and participate in working groups across the system.

  • Educated to Masters level or Post graduate/registration qualification with in-depth experience

Experience

  • Experience of working with a range of stakeholders; both internally and externally
  • Expereince of providing emotional support and counselling to colleagues and families

  • The ability to demonstrate empathy, active listening and provision of advice
  • Able to work within a MDT
  • Self motivated and able to work under own initiative and prioritise workload
