Senior Research Sister/Midwife

The Post holder will provide leadership and management to a clinical team, providing care to patients within Jessop Wing Research to meet National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) strategic aims and objectives.

The post holder will work closely with the Trust research Matron, Clinical research & Innovation Office, wider directorate based teams and the wider STH research teams to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of the  OG&N's extensive clinical research portfolio, which includes comprehensive risk assessments to ensure patient safety is upheld and that the clinical research activity is compliant with both research and clinical governance requirements.

The post holder will be responsible for the management and co-ordination and conduct of a portfolio of clinical  research projects within OG&N, based at Jessop Wing. To ensure the research practice meets the requirements of all applicable legislation and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

The post holder will need to possess an understanding of research processes and governance arrangements, as well as have a detailed insight of the core business and function of the unit’s activity to meets National and Local targets and clinical governance requirements.

The team work with numerous internal and external stakeholders – the ability to manage multiple and competing deadlines is essential, therefore excellent interpersonal and communication skills are imperative, along with a resourceful, positive and adaptable approach to the role.

The post holder will be responsible for managing problems, sometimes urgently and at short notice - having excellent communication skills as well as the drive and resilience to see problems through.

The post holder will be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, to meet NMC revalidation requirements. As part of the role the post holder will be expected to represent OG&N at Regional, National and International meetings.

Education and Qualifications

  • Registered General Nurse/ - Adult/Midwife with valid NMC registration.
  • Recognised teaching qualifications or equivalent demonstrable teaching and assessing experience.
  • Extensive evidence of continuous professional development Including post graduate qualifications and/ or academic research qualifications
  • Up to date Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certificate
  • First degree or evidence of working towards one (demonstrating graduate attributes)
  • Possess or be working towards an MSc in Clinical Research or health/biological related subject. Or demonstrable significant experience working at an equivalent senior level.

Experience

  • Extensive experience at Junior Sister/Charge Nurse or above in broad range of clinical settings including clinical research environment or demonstrable equivalent
  • Experience of managing multiple competing projects to time and target, within research or other relevant field
  • Ability to lead, motivate and develop a professional team
  • Experience of managing and delivering high quality patient care, promoting continuous improvements to service delivery
  • Strong IT skills competent in standard PC packages (i.e. Microsoft Office or equivalent) using both desktop packages and databases

  • Good understanding of the local and national strategic context of research in the NHS.
  • Experience of managing systems and processes to comply with both local and national targets/ frameworks

  • Advanced organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects at various stages of development and organisation.
  • Excellent performance management skills. Ability to appraise junior staff through performance review.
  • Highly developed leadership skills with excellent interpersonal skills - desire to be highly visible to form positive relationships at all levels
  • Ability to manage complex workload under pressure and prioritise to meet deadlines.
  • Persuasion and influencing skills – ability to present ideas and proposals effectively.
