An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, highly motivated midwife who is passionate about working in collaboration with the obstetric and other multi-disciplinary teams to promote the ongoing development of Diabetes services within the team, based at ESTH St Helier Site)

Essence of the Role

The post holder will be expected to work as a specialist (enhanced) diabetes midwife and provide high quality, effective, holistic, women centred pregnancy care for women with diabetes in pregnancy. In conjunction with the maternal medicine consultant(s) and associated multidisciplinary teams, the post holder will be responsible for providing midwifery care to pregnant women with diabetes and ensuring that communication between all parties involved is both timely and accurate.

The post holder will receive ongoing support, with opportunities to development additional skills and clinical practice.

The post holder will be instrumental in working with the wider teams in establishing continuity of care for diabetes in pregnancy.

The post holder will ensure compliance to guidelines and care pathways for individual woman.

The post holder will participate and develop audit tools or quality improvement projects to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the service.

The post holder will actively contribute in teaching and presenting in multidisciplinary training sessions.

Main duties of the job

Possess specialist skills and knowledge providing care in diabetes in pregnancy.

Facilitate and taking responsibility  for effective assessment, implementation and evaluation of all midwifery care for women and birthing people with diabetes and other complex medical conditions within own sphere of clinical practice.

Responsible for the protection and safeguarding of adult and children with awareness of child protection procedures and who to contact within the Trust for further guidance.

Having understanding of the guidelines relating to mental health issues and referral process

Responsible for the induction and development of midwifery staff in the clinical area.

Plan and facilitate education regarding Diabetes across the Trust and local Maternity System and partners

Promote positive learning environment within the clinical area.

Maintain detailed and accurate records regarding staff education and.

Provide a link between midwives, General Practitioners, Health Visitors, Obstetricians and other agencies in relation to women's care.

Person specification

NMC Registrant, Degree level qualification,

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife to a degree level
  • Evidence of Continued professional development e.g Teaching /assessing qualification
  • Significant post registration experience in Midwifery
  • Possession Leadership qualities
  • Experience in managing and leading a team
  • Experience of undertaking and implementation of projects
  • Experience in undertaking audits in practice area
Desirable criteria
  • Master's degree or working towards one
  • Recognised management /leadership qualification

Evidence of further study on Diabetes in pregnancy

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience of working in a Diabetes Maternity team
Desirable criteria
  • Non-medical prescriber
  • Experience working as a Diabetes Specialist Midwife
  • Formal educational qualification relating to Diabetes in Pregnancy
