Description
The L&D is a medium size general hospital with 550 inpatient beds. The hospital provides a comprehensive range of general medical and surgical services, including A&E, for over 300,000 people in Luton, South Bedfordshire and parts of northwest Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. The catchment population is projected to increase to 500,000 in the next 10 years. The Trust has one of the country's largest breast screening centres and provides a limb fitting service. The Trust has developed some specialist services including cancer and oral maxillo facial surgery and has the responsibility for treating the most premature babies across the whole of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

28% of Luton's population are from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds; the main groups are Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Indian, African-Caribbean and Eastern European. Luton is an area of high deprivation; consequently our local population display diseases and conditions are more usually associated with those of an inner city area.
