Southend Hospital NHS Trust was established in April 1991 as one of the first wave NHS Trusts following the Health Service reforms. We are directly responsible for the operation of our services to the Essex Strategic Health Authority.
We have a well-established Clinical Directorate structure, with 14 separate directorates (with Surgery being divided into 3 further directorates), each with a Clinical Director.
We are an Associate University Teaching Hospital and were awarded Investors in People Accreditation in 2002 for the second time. We have received recognition as a PP Employer of Disabled Persons and the South Eastern regional Parents at Work award (supported by the Department of Trade and Industry). We have also achieved Practice Plus (third stage) of the NHS Improving Working Lives standard.
In August 2004 plans for our proposed Treatment Centre at Fossetts Farm were given the go-ahead by Southend Council. Negotiations have taken rather longer than anticipated but we are still fully committed to this facility which will provide services away from our very-crowded hospital site to allow much-needed redevelopment to be carried out.
We have c3994 staff, 840 beds, treat 78,000 inpatient/day cases, 302,000 outpatients and 84,000 A&E attendees. We serve a local population of over 330,000 and provide a comprehensive range of acute services including Acute medical and surgical specialities e.g. general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, ear, nose and throat, ophthalmology, cancer treatment, renal dialysis, obstetrics & gynaecology and children's services.
We are proud of our record of recruiting high-quality staff and we will continue to do so. Our future depends on them. Our enthusiastic participation in research and education is vital in helping to attract the best staff and we will maintain that high-profile role.
The Trust gained foundation status on 1st June 2006.
