We have an amazing opportunity available due an increasing in funding investment for an established and experienced registered nurse that is looking for the next career move. You will be an enthusiastic, hard-working and committed individual to join our Women's Health Team. The Gynaecology ward team provide care to women and their families across our inpatient ward and our gynaecology and early pregnancy assessment unit as well as its own incorporated day of surgery admission area separate to that of the rest of the hospital. 

The Gynaecology Ward accommodates a diverse mixture of surgical and emergency patients within the 18 bedded area, offering a tertiary service  for Gynaecology Oncology and Endometriosis patients alongside our early pregnancy patients.

We have 2-3 posts available depending on the hours wanted by the successful applicants. Please ensure you stipulate the hours you are looking for in your supporting statement.

Main duties of the job

You will have excellent communication and organisational skills, you will be passionate and strive to make a difference. You will be responsible for the provision of high quality care that is safe, efficient, effective, kind and meets the individual needs of women and their partners using our services. Together with the Gynaecology team you will be leading the service to uphold the Trust Values. You will be a team player who will support the team to develop the services offered.

Working closely with the two Ward Managers and the Matron, you will maintain a focus on the promotion of a close working relationship with the Multi-disciplinary team to uphold our standards and our mission to deliver excellent care with compassion, every time. You will deputise as a deputy ward manager on behalf of the ward manager to ensure consistent and safe care with compassion is delivered at all times to our patients whilst leading our amazing nursing and wider MDT teams.

As the shift leader on GAU you will take the lead in triaging the incoming referrals for assessment and supporting the other nurses on duty, in a department that can see around 30 - 40 emergency attendances per day, with the aim to avoid admission to hospital.

Whilst on the ward you will work as the shift leader, coordinating the ward activity and supporting our team to deliver outstanding patient care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

At Lancashire Teaching Hospitals the Gynaecology service provides a comprehensive choice to women and their families, providing tertiary services for 2.1million people across Lancashire and South Cumbria. We have a warm and welcoming Gynaecology team, well equipped facilities, and above all our commitment to quality care and safety is absolute. We have a strong commitment to staff development and service improvement; our priorities this year include developing plans to rebuild our assessment unit and develop our same day emergency care pathways. 

We also have a highly skilled and knowledgeable team of specialist nurses providing an enhanced level of care and support for women with additional medical issues. Our award winning research team are progressing and developing our research profile.

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Support the ward manager and matron in ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for within or by the ward, department, service or team
  • Ensure a high standard of nursing is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients' needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidenced based guidelines. 
  • Assist and support the ward manager in the safe, effective management of the area including management of personnel, facilities and the associated systems and processes. 
  • Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and organisation 
  • Be responsible for the delivery and coordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff.
  • Set monitor and maintain standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care
  • Proactively manage risk and maintain  patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care
  • Promote provision of patient education and health promotion 
  • Promote the equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals 
  • Ensures the environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness 
  • To participate in education and training of junior staff. 
  • Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within the scope of role and professional practice

Qualifications and Education

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate NMC Registration
  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing
  • NMC recognised Mentorship qualification
  • Evidence of continuing education or development in area of speciality
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration qualification in area of speciality
  • Leadership Qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of leadership experience and learning
  • Awareness of recent advances in nursing practice
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and safeguarding and the relevance to practice
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • Experience of implementing changes to benefit patients and improve nursing practice
  • Knowledge of ethical issues

  • Evidence of clinical competency in gynaecology and early pregnancy nursing
