Job overview

We are currently seeking a qualified and dedicated paediatric nurse with substantial experience to assume the leadership role on our Children's Ward. The selected candidate will bear overarching responsibility for ensuring the delivery of outstanding and secure healthcare services for our young patients and their families.

Ward 8 operates as a dynamic acute inpatient facility, catering to the healthcare needs of children spanning from birth to 16 years of age. The ward encompasses various surgical specialities, in addition to providing comprehensive general paediatric care and neurology services. Furthermore, we facilitate collaborative care for oncology cases through our Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) and administer high dependency care within the unit.

Main duties of the job

The role of ward manager is critical to ensuring standards of safety and quality are maintained, children and families have a positive experience and staff also have a positive experience working with us.

It goes without saying you will be supported in the progression of your career as part of a forward-thinking team with strong clinical leadership.  You will be supported by the Matron and other CYP leaders so will always have a point of contact to bounce ideas off as well as agree the changes necessary to drive the service forward.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Is responsible for the provision of Excellent Care with Compassion
  • Is responsible for ensuring that the nursing team and care support team are adequately resourced and organised in order to deliver excellent care with compassion
  • Is responsible for ensure the nursing team and care support team are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion
  • Is responsible for leading and developing the ward nursing team and the ward administration and support teams by being a visible and strong role model providing leadership and direction to the team, capitalising on  research and development opportunities, providing clinical supervision and advice for staff and students in order to support them in reaching their full potential
  • Is responsible for ensuring the productive operation of the ward  through the monitoring and maintenance of standards that create a safe, clean and organised environment and by using processes designed to increase the time nurses spend in therapeutic contact with patients
  • Safeguards people and promotes equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals

Person specification

Qualifications & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate Registration (e.g. NMC and HCPC)
  • Extensive experience working in healthcare with children and families
  • Mentorship qualification
  • Post Registration Qualifications relevant to the role
  • Evidence of Education to Degree Level.
  • Successful completion of a leadership and development programme equivalent to the Internal Band 6 Leadership and Development programme.
Desirable criteria
  • Level 4 ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) or equivalent

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Able to perform clinical duties commensurate to that of the role e.g. IV medications, Cannulation
  • Ability to Implement changes within nursing practice
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and Safeguarding and the relevance of these to practice
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of ethical issues.
  • Evidence of clinica
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of managing a clinical area
  • Knowledge of the PDPR Process
  • Experience of budgetary management
  • Evidence of working at Band 7

Skills & Abilities
