Job summary

  • To provide specialist inpatient Respiratory Medicine services (e.g. non-invasive ventilation) and appropriate links with other specialty teams
  • To develop, in conjunction with colleagues, outpatient and community multidisciplinary Respiratory Medicine services, appropriate to the local geography and in line with regional priorities as dictated by the regional Respiratory Services Framework
  • To participate fully in existing Respiratory Medicine activities in the Western Trust, including the Western Trust Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary Meeting and the Respiratory medicine/radiology meeting
  • To contribute to a medicine service of optimum quality within Western Trust
  • To share in the collective responsibility for the provision of acute medical services within the Acute Directorate, Division of Emergency Care & Medicine to provide specialist Respiratory medicine services
  • To contribute to the development of excellence in clinical practice through research, audit and participation in clinical and social care governance

Main responsibilities

  • The postholder’s prime clinical responsibility will be accountability for the continuous care of his/her patients and as part of this responsibility, a share of the out of hours general medical on-call rota arrangements. He/she shall also carry a proportion of the general medical inpatient workload.
  • Will promote and develop multidisciplinary teamwork within the speciality and will communicate effectively with all agencies and personnel involved in providing general medicine and Respiratory Medicine services.
  • Will work together with his/her colleagues in primary and secondary care in the further development of Respiratory Medicine services in the Western Health and Social Care Trust Area.
  • Will hold outpatient and outreach clinics, as required, for patients within the speciality group. The postholder will adhere to the out-patient clinic template of New :Review ratio of 1 : 2.3.
  • Will be responsible for providing procedures relating to the specialty and will develop same in keeping with medical advances
  • Maintaining a high level of specialist knowledge in respiratory medicine extending his/her professional and management knowledge and skills.
  • Play a role in medical education. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and to promote knowledge of the specialty of respiratory medicine amongst colleagues in the Western Trust.
  • Seek to develop research-based practice within statutory services and in combination with outside academic institutions.
  • Actively participate in clinical audit
  • Fulfill the relevant commitment to CPD
