The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at St Mary’s Hospital is recruiting for an experienced PICU Nurse at Band 8a Advanced Clinical Practitioner. The successful applicant will join to support a multidisciplinary team of skilled and highly motivated staff who provide quality care to children with a wide variety of conditions including medical, surgical, trauma, infectious diseases, orthopaedics, plastics, ENT and the largest Bone Marrow Transplant Centre non-malignant blood cancers in the UK.

The St Mary’s site is a designated children’s and adult major trauma centre with a dedicated 24/7 Children’s Emergency Department; and a specialist High Consequence Infectious Disease Unit within our PICU. 

We are looking for a Band 8a PICU Advanced Clinical Practitioner who is committed to delivering high quality care and will support our current and future services. The post holder must have completed two years of the specialist ACP Pathway or can demonstrate skills in patient assessment and non-medical prescribing. 

They must be prepared to undertake competency training alongside the development of an e-portfolio in-line with the speciality. They will engage in all development opportunities and be enthusiastic about their own development and growth and that of others. Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

  • To be an expert practitioner and role model in the field of Paediatric Intensive Care and ensuring the delivery of high standards of patient care.
  • To ensure clinical practice reflects professional and national guidance and practice are delivered in line with the scope of practice and trust policies and guidelines. 
  • To provide direct clinical care through health assessments and initiation of treatment for children attending for procedures/treatments within ACP’s authorised scope of practice.  
  • To be responsible for the clinical management of children / young people, utilising clinical knowledge and advanced skills to assess, diagnose, plan, implement and initiate changes where required. This will include monitoring and evaluating the response to treatment through analysis and interpretation of clinical tests and investigations
  • To respond to clinical emergencies, utilising clinical judgement and decision making to initiate appropriate interventions and treatments for patients.
  • To counsel and support the child, young person and families through the treatment process, utilise advanced decision-making skills and demonstrate understanding of when to refer.
  • To initiate drug therapy/ medication as appropriate, practicing as an independent prescriber for patients within area of competence. To be competent in the administration of medication, including under patient group directives

  • Qualification in Advanced Assessment Skills with evidence of clinical practice
  • Relevant clinical post qualification courses in PICU

  • Teaching qualification (IRMER)

Experience

  • Currently working as a senior nurse (minimum Band 7) in a PICU care setting
  • Senior clinical leadership experience (minimum Band 7)
  • Significant post registration experience in PICU
  • Experience and evidence of developing practice

  • Experience working as an Advanced Care Practitioner
  • Experience of disseminating work through presentation/publication
  • Previous experience in a practice development role/ formal teaching experience

Skills

  • Evidence of excellent communication and interpersonal skills to enable effective relationships with all staff; the patients and their carers and emergency service personnel
  • Experience and evidence of working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience of anticipating stressful situations and act in a supportive manner, safeguarding team wellbeing and leading debriefs
  • Evidence of effective leadership, practice development, expertise and innovation in clinical practice
