Clinical Nurse Specialist – Gastroenterology & Hepatitis

Job overview
We are looking for an experienced motivated individual who can fully engage, support to run the Hep B & Fibroscan clinics. You will be required to:
• work collaboratively with patients and staff to deliver a specialist service based within the clinic
• deliver a high quality, individually tailored empathetic advisory support to patients/ relatives and staff.
Ideally you will have had experience of working within a clinic set up and have an in depth knowledge and understanding of supporting a client through the various Hepatology conditions and treatments. We are looking for an experienced nurse with excellent communication skills – both written and verbal, have a good telephone manner.
Main duties of the job
This is for a B6 in Hepatology working as part of a team of specialist nurses within the Hepatology and Gastroenterology Strategic Business Unit.
The Department of Hepatology provides specialist care for patients with liver disease, including tertiary services in Hepatology. The Royal Surrey is commissioned as the lead provider for Hepatitis C and Primary Biliary Cholangitis for Surrey and a designated centre for rare liver diseases. Close liaison the surgical hepatobiliary team is maintained and Hepatologists manage the regional hepatocellular cancer MDT, and a trials portfolio. The department has also been commissioned by NHS England to deliver the first wave of Liver Health Checks pilots in England aimed to diagnose and engage people with cirrhosis in cancer surveillance pathways.
Each CNS is in Hepatology is the designated lead for part of the service and this post is required to provide oversight and governance for the fibro scan service in addition to general hepatology clinics. However all the hospital based CNS team are expected to develop a broad working knowledge of general hepatology including viral hepatitis (B and C), haemochromatosis, the management of metabolic liver disease, alcohol related liver disease, and complications of cirrhosis, to foster team work and cross cover between the nursing staff.
Whilst there is some degree of flexibility within the job plan it is expected that the successful candidate will work alongside the Consultant team in their scheduled outpatient clinics.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• The post holder will work autonomously within the multi-disciplinary team supporting the delivery of a comprehensive hepatology service for the local hospital based population
• The post holder will be trained to deliver diagnostic fibro scan, and will be responsible with colleagues for the delivery of the diagnostic fibro scan service vital for the delivery of 18 weeks in Hepatology
• Following a period of training the successful candidate will be expected to maintain a caseload within hepatology delivering outpatient clinics in general hepatology including viral hepatitis with indirect supervision from the consultant team
• Many patients with liver disease require health promotion and lifestyle advice, and the CNS team are central to this service offering e.g. specific advice for people living with chronic hepatitis B
• The post holder will have responsibility for the assessment, planning and organisation of a broad range of activities and programmes of care, and the development, implementation and evaluation of individualised care needs including Fibro scan.
• The post holder will work with managerial and administrative staff to oversee the fibro scan service ensuring timely access to diagnostic scan delivery and where appropriate same day diagnostics to support delivery of 18 week targets in Hepatology
• The post holder will participate in educational activities and clinical audit in this specialised area, ensuring development and progression of practices and guidelines within this environment.
• The post holder will be accountable for their nursing practices delivered to the patient and will be responsible for their own professional development, adhering to the policies and protocol of the Trust and the regulatory body for the nurse (NMC).

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse Part 1 or 12
- Recent post qualification or equivalent experience in acute setting
- Demonstrates professional updating of knowledge in past one/two years
- Teaching qualification ENB 998 or City & Guilds 730 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- First degree or willingness to undertake
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Experience of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Nursing at band 5 or above
- Can demonstrate up-to-date clinical credibility / competence
- Knowledge of clinical governance issues such as complaints handling, clinical risk management.
- Evidence of research based practice
- Experience with Clinical audit
- Evidence in changing practice and project management
