Advanced Clinical Practitioner (T&O)

Band 8a

Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to join our proactive and dynamic Trauma and Orthopaedics (T&O) team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).

We are expanding our ACP workforce to enhance the quality, continuity, and efficiency of care within the T&O service. Our team is dedicated to improving patient outcomes by delivering timely assessments, effective management plans, and safe discharges, reducing emergency department (ED) waiting times and hospital stays, while ensuring an excellent patient experience.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role is ideal for an established ACP with strong clinical expertise, leadership experience, and a passion for service improvement within a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

If you are an experienced Advanced Clinical Practitioner ready to take on a leadership role within a highly skilled and supportive team, we would love to hear from you.

Join us at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and be part of a service dedicated to improving outcomes and experiences for our Trauma & Orthopaedic patients.

As an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, you will apply the four pillars of Advanced Practice — Clinical Practice, Leadership, Education, and Research — to provide expert care and drive service excellence within Trauma and Orthopaedics.

Clinical Practice
•    Work as a core member of the medical team, taking responsibility for the medical management of a defined group of patients under the supervision of the responsible Consultant.
•    Undertake autonomous patient assessments, formulate management plans, and prescribe within your professional scope of practice.
•    Utilise advanced clinical knowledge and expertise in T&O to provide high-quality, evidence-based care.
•    Work proactively within pathways to reduce ED waiting times, facilitating prompt diagnosis, treatment, and discharge.
•    Ensure adherence to agreed clinical care protocols and patient safety standards.

Leadership
•    Demonstrate excellence in clinical leadership capabilities, promoting teamwork and a culture of safety and improvement.
•    Provide professional and organisational leadership, supporting the ongoing development and strategy of the T&O service.
•    Lead on service development, identifying and implementing new initiatives to enhance patient care and efficiency.
•    Develop and maintain competency and scope-of-practice documentation in line with Trust and national standards.
•    Escalate concerns appropriately, advocating for patients and staff where necessary.

Education
•    Provide specialist education and support to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals within the multidisciplinary team.
•    Act as a Clinical Practice Assessor and mentor for Trainee ACPs, facilitating a supportive and effective learning environment.
•    Contribute to departmental teaching sessions and encourage a culture of continuous learning.
•    Maintain an up-to-date portfolio and personal development plan to support ongoing professional growth.

Research and Service Development
•    Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to the Trust’s clinical governance framework.
•    Participate in audit, quality improvement, and research projects to evaluate and enhance service delivery.
•    Identify opportunities for further research and innovation within T&O.

What We’re Looking For

To be successful in your application, you will need to demonstrate:
•    A Master’s degree (Level 7) in Advanced Clinical Practice, including non-medical prescribing.
•    Significant post-qualification experience in a secondary care setting, ideally within Trauma & Orthopaedics.
•    Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
•    The ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
•    A commitment to delivering high standards of patient care, continuous improvement, and professional development.

We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and conscientious practitioner who thrives in a fast-paced environment and shares our commitment to providing excellent patient-centred care.
