Job overview

Barnet Special School Nursing team are looking for a flexible, motivated and highly skilled Special Scholl Nurse Assistant  to join us as a bank employee  in supporting children and young people with health needs to attend school and achieve their potential.

We are based in 2 Special Schools in Barnet, Oakleigh School and Maple down but also provide outreach services to Oak Lodge and Northway. 

You may be expected to travel between sites to support the nursing team with tasks such as heights and weights so will need excellent communication skills, administration and IT skills to support the team in delivering a high-quality service to the pupils and any professional partners.

 

Main duties of the job

  • To be aware of the importance of professionalism and boundaries when working closely with families
  • To work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team in the interests of the student and the wider community.
  • To carry out essential health procedures on students with care, sensitivity and using communication strategies specific to each students needs
  • To complete episodes of care which are detailed in the student’s health care plan and meet their health needs, escalating any concerns to the line manager.
  • To be able to write clear, legible reports, clinical notes and review students individual health care plans in line with school and CLCH record keeping policies.
  • To demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 by contributing to the health, safety and security of individuals in their environment

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Care certificate – or working towards this
  • Evidence of continuing professional development working with children up to NVQ level 3
  • Competencies in clinical care skills
  • Knowledge of safeguarding children
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma Level (or NVQ4 in Health & Social Care) or Equivalent Combination of NVQ3, courses and experience or NNEB equivalency
  • Makaton/BSL course
  • Medicine management course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of working with children and young people with complex health needs
  • Demonstrable experience of working with children and young people in a special school environment
  • Experience of documentation in a clinical setting
  • Experience of liaising with professionals
  • Experience of handling telephone calls independently and directing queries appropriately
  • Evidence of ability to carry out continence assessments
  • Evidence of understanding epilepsy/working with patients with epilepsy
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in culturally diverse communities

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Competence to administer medication
  • Ability to manage stock levels and equipment
  • Knowledge of safeguarding children/young people
  • Demonstrate computer literacy in programs such as excel, word, power point
  • Experience of enteral feeding
  • Experience of suctioning
  • Experience of clinical measurements and interpreting results appropriately, i.e. Height and Weight measuring
  • Experience of working with Clinical Systems e.g.S1
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in culturally diverse communities
  • Knowledge of purpose and value of clinical supervision

  • Hold a full, valid, UK driving licence and have access to a car to use for business purposes (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010)
