Job overview

Do you have a keen interest in specialising in diabetes care, or are you an experienced Diabetes Specialist Nurse (DSN) looking for your next rewarding challenge?

We warmly invite DSNs, as well as Registered Nurses looking to advance in this rewarding field, to join our welcoming, innovative multidisciplinary team as a Band 6 Diabetes Specialist Nurse. Here, you’ll work alongside Consultant Diabetologists, Specialist Diabetes Practitioners/Nurses, Podiatrists, Dieticians and other passionate colleagues, all focused on making a meaningful difference to patient outcomes.

You’ll be primarily based at a single site, ensuring team continuity and a strong support network, with occasional opportunities to assist neighbouring sites when clinical needs arise, demonstrating your adaptability and commitment to excellent patient care across our wider service. 

Applicants should be Registered Nurses with at least two years’ experience, ideally with expertise in both inpatient and outpatient diabetes care, a solid grasp of current diabetes technologies, and familiarity with key clinical guidelines. Progress towards TREND competencies is preferred.

Main duties of the job

  •  In conjunction with the multidisciplinary team and in line with local and national targets provide specialist evidence based nursing advise to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/ carers without supervision.
  • Support and deputise for senior diabetes specialist nurses. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in a variety of settings.
  • Provide expert advice and education for Healthcare professionals involved in the care of people with diabetes and their carers.
  • Be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and to provide cover at all sites, if required, acting as professional role model providing direct and indirect clinical care, teaching and research.

Education/ qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First level Registration
  • Relevant post basic qualification: ENB 928 or equivalent Diabetes course
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • ENB 998 or Teaching Certificate or experience in training and education
  • Willingness to undertake diabetes related degree or working towards it.
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma/First degree or working towards it
  • Counselling diploma
  • Leadership theory

Experience

Essential criteria
  • RGN level 1 minimum 3 years
  • Evidence of working with people with diabetes
  • Ability to apply evidence based practice
  • Recent experience of working in a Secondary care setting
  • Previous experience at F/G grade or band 6 or 7
  • Experience with diabetes technologies
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in secondary care
  • Experience/ appreciation of community issues/needs

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience of Teaching skills
  • Computer Literate
